Like Clockwork

Decorative glass cane that is based on the alphabet is used to render a text that references chromosomal helices. The text reads, “Whenever I slept with my mother / she would dream of my father / like clockwork. / By what mechanism / did the presence of my body / work this magic? / I imagine one half of my chromosomes / pulling her memories of him / to the surface of her consciousness / like a magnet— / Our bodies curled up / like commas on the sheet, / punctuating each other’s dreams.”
