I’m pleased to announce that my work, KowTow, received the Gold Award at this year’s Bulleye Emerge exhibition. I was excited to participate in Emerge this year because kiln cast glass was new territory for me in 2015; this honor was quite unexpected! I extend my thanks to studio assistant Anna Lehner for her help with this piece, as well as Sarah Archer and Cybele Malone for the opportunity to develop the body of work this piece came out of.

MATERIAL MYTHOLOGIES

Material Mythologies brings together textiles, beading, metal, ceramic, and glass by five artists from around the country, all of whom are working at the edge of contemporary craft and sculpture. The exhibition features works by Sonya Clark (Richmond, VA), Mary Giles (Stillwater, MN), Teri Greeves (Santa Fe, NM), Helen Lee (Madison, WI), and Jae Won Lee (East Lansing, MI). Helen Lee will deliver a gallery talk with curator Christopher Atkins at Minnesota Museum of American Art February 27 at 3pm. Lee will also give a hot glass demonstration at FOCI Glass Studio in Minneapolis February 28 at noon.

ART DEPARTMENT QUADRENNIAL FACULTY EXHIBITION
January 29-April 17, 2016  |  Chazen Museum of Art  |  Madison, WI
Works of painting, printmaking, graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, metalsmithing, glass, furniture making, papermaking, photography, digital media, video, and performance will fill the temporary galleries of the Chazen Museum of Art for the Art Department Faculty Quadrennial Exhibition 2016. Mounted every four years since 1974, the exhibition features recent work from current and past faculty and affiliates of the UW-Madison Art Department. Lee will give a gallery talk on her work at the Chazen Museum on February 10 at 12:30pm.

With the generous invitation of the Director Jeroen Maes, Hyperopia Projects has been invited to curate an exhibition at Glazenhuis, the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art. Featuring the work of 21 international artists, Whereabouts explores how glass artists navigate the displacement of their craft in contemporary practice with processes that embrace unorthodox methodologies of reconfiguration, disembodiment, and subversive misappropriation. Hyperopia Projects will introduce the exhibition at the opening on March 26th.

I will be presenting Tools for Teaching Glass as Movement-Based Praxis.  

I am extremely honored to have received the inaugural Irwin Borowsky Prize in Glass Art from University of the Arts in Philadelphia!!

I feel very lucky to have been invited to be participate in The Glass Virus Think Tank, hosted by the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Myself and three students from UW-Madison are representing Team USA on the academic glass front!

I will be speaking at “Issues in Glass Pedagogy: The Robert Minkoff Foundation Academic Symposium at UrbanGlass” on December 6th at 1:00 p.m. My talk will look at the various (biological, neurological, cultural, historical) underpinnings of the phenomenon of handedness. I will share various tactics in bringing an awareness of handedness into the hotshop and how this can be used as an effective tool for teaching.

I will be a visiting artist in late September at Toyama City Institute of Glass Art in Toyama, Japan! I will be working with the students there to make the Iroha in glass.

I am joining the faculty at University of Wisconsin Madison this Fall as an Assistant Professor in the Art Department. More on this when I update the Glass Lab’s website!

I have a few pieces in the Reversible Reactions exhibition at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. The show’s up until November 3rd.

In the Summer of 2012, I had the pleasure of participating as a designer in the Glass Lab on Governor’s Island event, sponsored by the Corning Museum of Glass and Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum. This series coincided with the exhibition Graphic Design—Now in Production, co-organized by Cooper-Hewitt and the Walker Art Center.
