Words Are Not Things

Regardless of what linguistic model we refer to, the function of a word is to stand in, to signify, to represent. Words are not things. This obvious statement seems a necessary preface to the extensive history of the physical word in contemporary art. This piece prompts the viewer to consider the impetus for defying this basic characteristic of a word.
